Siblings

Siblings

When living with special needs children with special needs are in a family, the siblings’ lives are also impacted. Sometimes, it is hard for another child to understand why her sibling requires more attention from her parents.

It may be difficult for them to understand the medical condition that their sibling may have. Educating the brothers and having their support is very important because siblings are critical to how successful parents can implement strategies during daily routines.

Siblings are very supportive and can serve as role models for that child who needs more support from those around her. Siblings are a gift from our parents. Once you have a sibling, you learn many things in life, such as sharing, unconditional love, compassion, competition, friendship, empathy, acceptance, and taking turns.

This learning aspect is sometimes impacted when one of the siblings is sick or has any disabilities. All Steps Count has acknowledged this situation in many of the families we served, so he created this “corner” to recognize all the siblings with a special sibling disability.

ASC what to say: “Thanks” to you and your efforts to make the best of you to understand your sibling’s situation. To parents and caregivers, your child with special needs is very important but not more important than your other children. Each one of them is going to need special care and understanding.

Once again, knowing why this is important to identify and how it needs to be addressed gives you powerful information to manage and advocate for both of them.
